A Brief History of Summer

Summer was born May 9, 2013 to breeders  Mr. & Mrs. Hugh G. King & B. P. Walden, Jr. She was sold at Keenland’s September 2014 yearling sale for $12,000 to Jim Billingsley of Indiana.

Trainer Steve Fridley ran her as a 3 year old in May of 2016 at Arlington. She came in last.

5 more races at Fairmount Park made it clear that Summer was not interested in being a racehorse.

Summer was listed on Canterusa.org in 2016. She was eventually picked up for a breeding project, which did not come to fruition. She sat at a farm outside of Atlanta, losing weight and being neglected.

Morgan Kennedy, who was a boarder at the property next door, happened to see Summer (and her pasture mate Cosmo, also in poor condition) and took action. Summer and Cosmo were moved to Bentfork Farms for rehab, and Morgan quickly determined that Summer had a great brain and good conformation to start a new life as a sport horse.

Morgan took ownership of Summer and after getting some weight back on her and doing a lot of groundwork, put her in the capable hands of Aubrey Graham for professional training.

Summer was RRP 2018 eligible so that became the goal for Team Summer. She surpassed all expectations and placed in the top 3rd of all entries in Eventing in Kentucky in October 2018.

Summer returned to Georgia after the RRP and started a much needed break from work. In April of 2019 she was brought back into work and will continue to be ridden by her owner and may do some showing in the fall.
